In June of this year, Byron Nichols, Cybex International Territory Manager, placed 5th in his class at the International Powerlifting Federation Bench Press World Championships in Prague, Czech Republic. Byron, who is 41 years old, 6 feet tall, weighing 275 pounds bench pressed 633.8 lbs on his third attempt at the competition.

This represents a jump for Byron from the national to the world stage in Powerlifting competition. Byron won 1st place at the National Bench Press Championships in Denver, Colorado last November with a personal best lift of 639 lbs. This earned him a spot on Team USA. He and his team mates placed 2nd overall in Prague just one point behind the Japanese Team.

In the sport of Powerlifting, there are three events: the squat, bench press and deadlift. Byron is a bench press specialist but enjoys competing in the 3-lift meets. During competition, three judges take into account several form elements, such as feet movement, head position, even extension of the arms. Each competitor is allowed three to four attempts on each lift depending on their standing and the organization they are lifting in. The lifter’s best valid attempt on each lift counts toward his competition total.

Powerlifting is different than Olympic Weightlifting which involves lifting the barbell from the floor to over one’s head. It is also different than bodybuilding which is based on how you look as opposed to how strong you are. However, there is a solid connection between bodybuilders and powerlifters. Bodybuilders use Powerlifting exercises to build muscle mass and many powerlifters will turn to bodybuilding at the end of their lifting careers. The result is that the sport of powerlifting is growing in popularity globally.

Congratulations, Byron on your excellent placement at the world championship. We are proud to have a titan in our midst!

Roehampton University
Roehampton University

Roehampton University, London’s only campus university, has created a new fitness facility using Stage 2 Inclusive Fitness Initiative (IFI) accredited equipment. It includes 40 stations of CV and resistance equipment in an 850 square foot gym. CYBEX provided the IFI equipment for the facility.

The Director of Sport & Wellbeing at Roehampton University, Ian Pickup said “We have a broad commitment to promoting social justice, which means that we must ensure that our students, staff and community partners can access fully inclusive opportunities to be active.” Ian further commented that CYBEX offered “high quality, biomechanically advanced equipment…and they were also one of the few suppliers to offer a comprehensive range of Stage 2 IFI accredited equipment.”
