Cables vs. Selectorized The Truth on Fitness:
Cables vs. Selectorized

The Truth on Fitness: Are Cables Better Than Selectorized Machines? — by Dr. Paul Juris, Executive Director of the CYBEX Institute
In today’s functionally oriented fitness world, there is a growing sentiment, that amongst strength machines, selectorized training devices are inappropriate, while cable-based systems are the method of choice. The crux of this argument is rooted in the belief that strength, gained through movements which are defined by the machine, does not transfer to daily skills. User-defined movements, some have argued, will result in more “transferable” strength gains.

New Dual Use Sports Centre For Worcester, UK
Worcester City Council in the UK, in partnership with Worcestershire County Council and Christopher Whitehead Language College, has built a new £4 million dual use sports centre funded by Sainsburys as part of the re-development of the Swanpool Walk area. The facility includes 42 pieces of CYBEX Stage 2 IFI accredited CV and resistance equipment.

The new facility replaces the existing 24 year old building which was purchased by the supermarket chain who are building a new superstore on the old site. Called St Johns Sports Centre, the new building benefits from its high profile location directly on the main Malvern Road, which was previously a derelict site, and local people have been excited by its contemporary curves and light, spacious interior.

Alan New, Recreation Business Manager at Worcester City Council, explained, “The new building gave us the opportunity to design the facility the way we wanted to. We took this opportunity to correct any challenges that we faced at the old site. We wanted to create a light and airy space with viewing windows so that there is good visibility for our members to see the variety of activities on offer at the centre. As well as building two gyms, we also created two sets of changing rooms, one for the pupils, when they use the site during the day, and one for our members, which are finished to a very high standard. This has enabled us to compete on a level playing field with private clubs in the area and to ensure that our members get access to a high quality low cost facility. I don’t believe any of our competitors can offer such a wide range of choice of activities at such a competitive price.”

The new building is split over two floors and includes 56 stations in the two gyms, 42 of which are CYBEX Stage 2 IFI accredited CV and resistance equipment, as well as a 4 court sports hall, activity suite, dance studio and two outdoor 3G five a side football pitches.

Commenting on his decision to use CYBEX, Alan New said, “We wanted to create a real wow factor with the gyms, trebling the number of stations that we had in the old facility. This meant that the choice of equipment was vital. CYBEX offered us a good balance of value for money and excellent customer service. Before purchasing, we were shown a variety of sites already using their equipment and any enquiries we had were dealt with quickly and with the appropriate information. This, in combination with the competitive pricing, offered us a good purchasing option.”

He concluded, “The staff and members have been really impressed with the equipment, gyms and new facilities overall. In the first three weeks of opening in September our membership numbers doubled.”

St Johns Sports Centre offers cost effective memberships to its 1000 members, from £32 per month, with 25% discounts on offer for under 16s and over 60s and 50% discounts for those on means tested benefits. Members also benefit from the use of the centre’s sister site, Nunnery Wood Sports Complex, which offers complementary facilities including squash courts and athletics facilities. The centre is now working towards IFI accreditation, so that local people with physical, cognitive and visual impairments can fully enjoy the facilities.

CYBEX Supports Polish Charity
CYBEX has recently supported the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity (Wielka Orkiestra Świątecznej Pomocy) during their 17th Grande Finale. The charity, which has been running events annually since 1993, organised a variety of activities throughout Poland on 11th January. Over 120,000 volunteers took part. The events were televised on both TVP (Polish national television) and TVN (private television). In total, to date, over $10 million has been raised to help fund equipment for the early diagnosis of cancer in children.

CYBEX’s exclusive partner in Poland, Gymnasion, supported the event by loaning 445T Treadmills, on which celebrities, actors, singers, scientists, politicians, businessmen and dignitaries ran, raising money for the charity via audience donations. At the end of the event, the treadmill was auctioned live on air, with all the proceeds donated to the charity.

This year’s campaign focused on the prevention and early diagnosis of cancer in children. Using the money raised, the aim is to create a net of diagnosis centres with ultra-modern equipment covering the whole country. The charity is also championing an awareness campaign to make parents aware that early diagnosis of cancer in children is both possible and needed.
