The Truth on Fitness:
Should Women Run?
The Truth on Fitness: Should Women Run? — by Dr. Paul Juris, Executive Director of the CYBEX Institute
Should women run? This is the question that was recently posed on a popular internet sports conditioning forum. Citing a review article published in the journal Sports Medicine, and a vague reference to women’s structural anatomy, the commentator questioned whether women should run. Leisure Center in UK
Local Authority Leisure Center Built in Wales, UK.
A new multi-million pound leisure centre has been built in Wales. Costing £16 million, Merthyr Tydfil Leisure Centre, which is owned by the County Borough Council, has been constructed on old playing fields. The new 100,000 sq ft flagship development was funded by the sale of the remaining land to developers, creating a ‘leisure village’ including cinema, restaurants, a hotel, and all CYBEX equipment.
The new centre has, for the first time, given local people access to wet leisure facilities. Keen to capitalise on this, the council is the only one in Wales that offers all under 16 year olds access to free swimming all year round.
Richard Marsh, Deputy Head of Leisure at Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council, explained, “In essence we wanted to offer our members and customers from the local area a centre which was the standard of a private club with quality facilities and service but at accessible local authority prices.”
The state of the art centre replaces its 30 year old predecessor, Rhydycar Leisure Centre, which sits next to the new facility and was demolished in January 2009.
Renamed to highlight the community which it serves, the new centre includes three swimming pools: a 25m 6 lane competition pool, learner pool and free form leisure pool with flume, spa bath and water feature, 65 station fitness suite stocked with a mix of standard and IFI accredited Cybex CV and resistance equipment with integrated AV solution, freeweights room, 8 badminton court/multi purpose sports hall, gymnastics hall, squash courts, dance studio, as well as a health suite featuring sauna, steam room, spa pool and relaxation room.
Commenting on his decision to use Cybex equipment, Richard Marsh said, “We had used Cybex’s Eagle resistance equipment in the old centre, alongside their Arc Trainers and we were really impressed with it. We have brought this equipment to the new site, as well as purchasing over 40 pieces of new equipment from Cybex. Part of our decision was definitely based on performance. Cybex’s equipment is aimed at higher performers. and we cater for everyone from the deconditioned to elite athletes. Cybex’s equipment allows us to do that. Cybex were also able to offer us a comprehensive range of IFI stage 2 accredited equipment which was important for DDA requirements.”
Incredibly, the old centre was closed on 19th October with the new one opening to the public just one week later, and the wet facilities coming on line one week after this.
Richard Marsh commented, “We wanted continuity for our existing customers and members and the anticipation of the new centre was such that we were keen to capitalise on this buzz with the minimum gap between one facility closing and the new one opening.”
The new centre has had a big impact on this socially deprived area. Member numbers have doubled in the two months since the new centre’s opening in October 2008. Whilst limited hours sessions for 14-16 year olds have also been popular. Monthly memberships start at £22.50 per month including unlimited use of the gym, free weights room, swimming pools and studio classes.
