Federal Government Releases Physical Activity Guidelines

A Capitol Report from IHRSA

On October 7, 2008 the US Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) Secretary Mike Leavitt announced the release of the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. “It’s important for all Americans to be active, and the Guidelines are a roadmap to include physical activity in their daily routine,” Leavitt said. “The evidence is clear -- regular physical activity over months and years produces long-term health benefits and reduces the risk of many diseases. The more physically active you are, the more health benefits you gain.”

According to the new Guidelines, adults gain substantial health benefits from two and a half hours a week of moderate aerobic physical activity, and children benefit from an hour or more of physical activity a day. The most comprehensive Guidelines of their kind were based on the first thorough review of scientific research about physical activity and health in more than a decade.

“The Guidelines are an excellent example of they type of sound government policy that encourages healthy lifestyles that we so vigorously support,” said Joe Moore, IHRSA President and CEO. “Over the last year there has been growing support for physical activity and its vital role in prevention among policymakers. These Guidelines will not only be beneficial to our industry, but will raise awareness among policymakers and educate the average American about the health benefits of exercise.”

In addition to the Guidelines, HHS launched a number of supporting documents including “Be Active Your Way: A Guide for Adults,” fact sheets for adults and professionals, a tool kit user’s guide, posters and event flyers. All of the documents are available at www.IHRSA.org/paguidelines.

To assist health clubs integrate the Guidelines into their operations, IHRSA is offering members a number of resources. Currently, members can download a customizable press release template and PR strategies for gaining media coverage. On Monday, all IHRSA members will receive the first issue of a new, limited edition email newsletter, The Guidelines Report. The once-a-week emails will feature promotional strategies, health tips and event ideas to reinvigorate members and reach out to those in your community who are not currently exercising.
