Dr. Carolyn Kaelin Attends Launch of Pink Ribbon Run

CYBEX is proud that Dr. Carolyn Kaelin, noted author and Harvard breast cancer surgeon, joined the launch of the Pink Ribbon Run.

A winner of two prestigious American Medical Writers Association awards, Dr. Kaelin appeared with Myra Biblowit, President of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, to promote the Pink Ribbon Run for breast cancer research.

The Breast Cancer Research Foundation has partnered with CYBEX to raise money to find a cure in our lifetime. CYBEX will donate 10¢/mile for miles logged on the pink treadmill in the month of October 2009. To find a facility with a pink treadmill near you click here.

Research from The Nurses Health Study published in the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) tracked nearly 3,000 women up to 14 years after their breast cancer diagnosis and found that exercise reduced the likelihood of breast cancer recurrence and increased the odds of living longer.

Dr. Carolyn Kaelin, Harvard surgeon and author of The Breast Cancer Survivor’s Fitness Plan, explains
  • "recurrence rates and deaths from breast cancer decreased up to 40 percent among those who exercised most, compared with those who were sedentary. Brisk walking for 3-5 hours per week – about 30 minutes a day – netted the biggest benefits."
  • "(Exercise) does not need to be running a marathon, or biking a century,” notes Kaelin, “but rather simply walking briskly most days that reduces breast cancer recurrence for those who have been treated for the condition. Furthermore, for all women, in addition to physical activity optimizing body weight and reducing high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes, scientific research is more strongly pointing to the positive effects of exercise in reducing breast cancer risk and the risks of other forms of cancer too."
